  1. Thanks for posting. I remember first noticing that in the captions to various Marie-Antoinette portraits I'd see a woman's name as portraitist and thought it was so cool that a woman in that era had such a high-ranking subject.

  10. It IS a great painting. I love the coloration, the sense that there is blood beneath the flesh. And I agree with Arabella that the model's amused and confident expression is a great part of the charm of the piece. [Though the sheer striped scarf mimicking the stripes around the hat is witty and striking in its own right.]
