Madame de Pompadour and Louis XV

A description of Louis XV from 1747

"He [Louis XV] made up a table of comète [card game] with Madame de Pompadour, Coigny, Madame de Brancas, and the Comte de Noailles, the King rather enjoyed that sort of little game, but Madame de Pompadour seemed to hate gambling and to be trying to put him off it."

from a letter by the Prince de Croÿ, dated 30 January 1747

  1. They seemed to be very cute together.
I wonder, who was Louis 15 great love?
Madame de Pompadour, or Madame du Barry?

  2. Du Barry definitely. While He was first in love with Pompadour, he once commented to an adviser (after her Death by a couple years) that she had a knack for complaining and avoid her "business nights". When Du Barry left Versailles a couple nights before his death, he summoned her, but she was already gone. He was reported to have "cried silently", which NO ONE embarrasses the king like that. He also enjoyed Du Barry because she didn't understand Court Etiquette and he found that alluring, that and just her individual beauty. Many people look similar in their portraits. Look at hers! Almond eyes, dirty blond hair, and Louis, while drunk, had commented on how she was an "astounding lover". I hope this answers your question. :)
