Royal Treasures from the Louvre: Louis XIV to Marie-Antoinette

When the Louvre sends art work to you, you go visit it!  The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco has just opened their latest exhibition: Royal Treasures from the Louvre: Louis XIV to Marie-Antoinette. 




The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco have been in conversation with the Louvre in hopes of arranging this five year agreement for programming, and now it is on! So we can expect to see more special collections traveling to California for display.

This exhibition features a special rare collection of items both bought and commissioned by those such as Louis XIV, Madame du Barry, Marie Antoinette, Louis XV and Louis XVI.  This show is particularly special because it is the first time that many of the works have ever left France! Coffee grinder, 1756-1757. Jean Ducrollay, goldsmith. Gold in three colors, steel and ivory. Musee du Louvre.

Portrait of Louis XIV, 17th century. Goldsmith-jeweler: Laurent Tessier Montarsy (?-1684). Miniature painting, silver and diamond.

Agate ewer. Paris, c. 1650. Enameled gold mount. Entered the collection of Louis XIV before 1673.

Famous Bust of Marie Antoinette. Commissioned by Prince Alexandre Kourakine. 1782. Hard-paste porcelain.
